Two sleek dark bobs, two bold red mouths, acres of pale paper between them — the look Patrick Nagel made unmistakable.
Patrick Nagel built an entire visual language out of subtraction: flat colour, a handful of decisive lines, nothing to hide behind. His women needed almost nothing else to read as composed and glamorous — sleek dark hair, one block of warm skin tone, a single red mouth. He came to that economy through Art Deco and Japanese woodblock printmaking, both traditions that trust a flat shape over a modelled one.
It made him one of the most recognised commercial illustrators of his decade — his 1982 cover for Duran Duran's “Rio” is still ranked among the most iconic album covers ever made.
This print doubles the figure. Two women, turned toward each other in near-mirror, share one wide gap of pale ground between them — a small rust sun and a scatter of dry grass the only other marks on the page. Where Nagel usually isolated a single subject, here the empty space does double duty: holding two figures in conversation and still reading as calm from across a room.
Where it lives: a study or reading corner that wants one confident, graphic accent rather than a gallery wall.
