The mountains in Avatar aren't fictional — they're erosion, fog, and a very real forest park in Hunan, China.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park holds more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars, carved over millions of years by erosion alone — they don't float, but the dense fog that regularly fills the canyon makes them read that way for a few minutes at a time. James Cameron's production team has said the Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora drew on exactly this kind of karst formation, Zhangjiajie among them; one real pillar was renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain after the film's release.
