Janet Fish spent decades proving a glass jar was never really about the jar.
She painted glass vessels from direct observation over days or weeks, deliberately letting daylight change and complicate what was in front of her — "a jar of jelly was never just a jar of jelly," she said. "It was reflection, refraction, and distortion." Her true subject, by her own account, was light and colour, not the object holding them.
This piece catches exactly that moment: late light raking low across an indigo wall, catching the glass low in its belly and turning it the same cobalt as dusk, while loose orange blooms and bare branches rise above the glass line, almost secondary to what the light is doing beneath them.
